Croydon
One of the most vibrant areas of Greater London is the central area of Croydon. Currently undergoing a massive £5.2b regeneration program in terms of office space, housing, infrastructure and amenities it promises to be totally transformed. From the somewhat ‘once vibrant but now neglected’ feeling, blighted by 1960s and 1970s architecture, to what promises to be a south London centre for entertainment and culture (or so it claims).
The London Borough of Croydon was created in 1965. The borough itself is extensive in size covering not only the central area but more residential and salubrious outlying locations such as Purley, Sanderstead, Wallington, Caterham & Coulsdon amongst others.
The focal point of central Croydon is the area around East Croydon Station.
The station itself has excellent connections into London and south towards Gatwick Airport and Brighton. Immediately outside the station you can pick up the Tramlink service which runs throughout the borough and goes as far out as Wimbledon.
There are numerous clubs, pubs, bars and restaurants to suit all pockets within walking distance of the station. Perhaps the most exciting leisure development is the new Boxpark development. A two level development full of eateries and drinking establishments and set out to remind one of a Munich Beer Hall. Regular events are held throughout the year and are definitely aimed at those looking to have a good time on a Friday evening!
Croydon is not solely a place to have a good time. It does have highlights such as the old Croydon Airport. This was once an International Airport in the early days of passenger flight and is well worth a visit.
