About Greenwich
Greenwich is probably one of the most iconic locations in London. Probably the location’s greatest claim to fame is that in 1884 the meridian line that runs through the Royal Observatory was chosen as the international meridian from which longitude is calculated.
Due to its riverside location Greenwich is steeped in history with many associations to our maritime and royal past. Henry VII owned a palace at Greenwich which was the birthplace of some of our most well-known monarchs (Henry VIII, Elizabeth I). Sadly Charles II saw fit to demolish it.
A visit to the Cutty Sark is another of Greenwich’s highlights. This ‘Tea Clipper’ dates from around 1869. In it’s day it used to be the fastest ship of it’s kind as Britain got a taste for tea importing huge quantities from China.
Two more modern highlights of Greenwich are the O2 arena and the Emirates Air Line Cable Car. Both of these are well worth a visit.
