About Orpington
The place name of Orpington first appears in 1036 and is later mentioned in the Doomsday Book of 1086 when the population was documented at 75-100.
The mid 19th century changed everything with the development of the railways. A line was constructed from London Victoria through Kent finally arriving in Orpington in 1868.
The second wave of railway development around 1900 really put Orpington on the map so to speak. Most of the property in Orpington dates from around the early 1900s. The 1930s saw the development of ‘Mock Tudor’ houses and estates. This development continued into the 1950s & 1960s turning Orpington into a commuter town with fast links into central London. The population has grown from around 700 in 1900 to approximately 15500 in the 2011 census.
Though principally a commuter town, Orpington’s history is a little more interesting than one might think. The Crofton Roman Villa site is open April through October each year and is well worth a visit to see how distant ancestors lived between 140 A.D. and 400 A.D.
